Wild Movie

Last night I attended the Portland premier of the feature film “Wild” based on the book of the same name by Portlander Cheryl Strayed. The red carpet was rolled out in front of the newly renovated Cinema 21 on NW 21st. The audience was packed with locals, cast, crew and family members of the author and filmmakers. The screening was opened by Tim Williams, the newly appointed Director of the Oregon Film Office. He introduced the films director Jean-Marc Vallée who introduced the producers along with the films stars Reese Witherspoon and Laura Dern.

The first word I would say is “Oscar.” There is already a buzz regarding this film online as being an Oscar contender. The movie “Wild” is a simple story of a young woman reflecting on her life, while hiking the Pacific Crest Trail. It feels raw, in its own reality, in the back drop of the Sierra Nevada’s and Cascade Mountains. Film mostly in Oregon, it has an organic feel, an almost documentary quality, peppered with flashbacks of Cheryl’s life. The music is not intrusive but plays an important element of storytelling. I highly recommend this film.
