Portland Marathon to Celebrate Fitness, Fundraising

Runners and walkers from all 50 states and 31 countries will descend on Portland this weekend for the 43rd annual Portland Marathon, Sports and Fitness Expo, Portland Marathon Half, 10K Family Walk, Event Directors’ College and Kids’ Fun Run & Festival.  Many runners and walkers will be participating in the Marathon’s “Speak with Your Feet” fundraising campaign to honor and support victims of the Boston Marathon bombings in April.  This initiative continues the Portland Marathon’s role as a powerful vehicle for charity, with more than $1.5 million raised during the past decade.  Last year alone, the Marathon gave $200,000 in grants and donations to area non-profits, service clubs, school groups and athletic teams through its Going the Distance Foundation.

While the main events are sold out, registration is still open for the Kids’ Fun Run & Festival on Saturday morning at the Lincoln High School track.  There are four Fun Run events ranging from ¼-mile to 1-mile for kids between the ages of two and 12, along with a festival featuring an inflatable obstacle course, face painting, healthy snacks and appearances by Timber Joey and Blaze the Trail Cat from the Trail Blazers.
