I appreciate films that are about real people versus super heroes. A real story with a real plot goes a long way to engage the audience into the story. This film is about two grumpy old estranged friends, Bill Bryson (Academy Award winner Robert Redford), and Steven Katz (Academy Award nominee Nick Nolte), who seek one last great adventure by hiking the Appalacian Trail. The trek is over 2,000 miles of America’s most rural, unspoiled and spectacular countryside from Georgia to Maine. Even with its many plot holes and over dramatized situations, it was an enjoyable movie. I think that the supporting cast of Emma Thompson, Nick Offerman, Kristen Schaal, Mary Steenburgen, really makes this a watchable film.
Ken Kwapis directed the screenplay by Rick Kerb and Bill Holderman.
