In a swirl of many, many small circles
Froelick Gallery is happy to announce the return of Tokyo artist Takahiko Hayashi for his first solo exhibition with us since 2010. In the interim, Hayashi has continued to refine his masterful etchings and works on paper while actively exhibiting internationally.
His new show, In a swirl of many, many small circles, he presents minutely detailed vortices of blue ink pen strokes, spinning coronas of stellar forms and cyclonic clouds of fine hatched lines that suggest celestial bodies or stormy oceans. Building mark upon mark, his ink glimmers with saturation. Within these maelstroms are tiny perforations in the paper surface, encircled with drips of white or bright green paint- these tiny eruptions forming slight topographic features on the surface of his fibrous, thin-but-strong gampi paper.
Also included in this show are a small number of prints. One, The Nest of Winds 6, is a large multi-plate intaglio etching incorporating a variety of chine colle papers which lend it a bannerlike appearance. His bright and rust orange whorls find grounding in etching’s solid, graphic mark.
Takahiko Hayashi is one of Tokyo’s most well-regarded contemporary master printers. Over the course of his 30-year career, he has exhibited widely throughout Japan, the United States and Europe.
