Ask Dr. V:

I heard that BOTOX® Cosmetic was recently FDA-approved for crow’s feet.  How does it work in that area of the face?

Great question.  Many patients wonder what they can do about their crow’s feet.  Even though the lines in crow’s feet are considered “happy lines” (from smiling,) most men and women want to minimize them.  In addition to sunscreen and a great eye cream, BOTOX® Cosmetic can have a significant positive impact on these smile lines.

BOTOX® Cosmetic is a temporary muscle relaxer.  It is injected with a tiny needle directly into the muscle that wraps around your eye and causes the crow’s feet when contracted.   When administered properly to the eye area, BOTOX® Cosmetic will leave you looking natural and even give you a bright, refreshed look to your eyes.  The FDA approval recommends the use of 24 units (usually less than $300) and results last for up to four months.  To find an experienced BOTOX® provider, log on to BOTOXcosmetic.com.

Many women – and even men – get their hair colored every six to eight weeks.  Keeping up with your grow-out can be both time intensive and expensive.  Not to mention the difficulty in securing an appointment with your favorite stylist!  Additionally, harsh chemicals, hair dyes and bleaches can do a number on our hair, causing damage and breakage.  Jonathan Product Awake Color Root Touch Up is a brilliant and workable solution.  This powdered hair color comes in a nifty brush-on dispenser in multiple colors.  This “hair shadow” can touch up your roots and make your hair look fresh in seconds.  It can also make thinning hair look thicker.  Keep your tube in your purse or car for last minute touch ups, and never wo

We all know it is important to start the day with a nutritious meal or snack that fuels our body and gets your metabolism humming.  With our busy schedules that often start before dawn, breakfast can be the easiest meal to skip or scarf down something innutritious.  Yogurt can be a convenient, quick and easy solution to our morning nutrition needs, but beware the type of yogurt you consume.  Many yogurts contain more calories from sugar than your favorite dessert or ice cream!  The American Heart Association recommends no more than 36 grams of sugar per day for men and only 20 grams per day for women (yes, you read that correctly!)  Many yogurts contain more than 20 grams of sugar in a 6-oz serving, and if you add granola to the mix, you can easily exceed the maximum daily recommended grams of sugar – and all before 10 AM.  One healthier yogurt option is 100 calorie “Greek” yogurt.  This type of yogurt is typically lower in sugar and can be higher in protein.  The taste is less sweet than regular yogurt, so it may take some getting used to, but the payoff is well worth it.

Many of us love beautiful nails and even splurge on professional manicures and pedicures from time to time.  What most of us can live without, however, is nail polish full of toxic chemicals and formaldehyde.  Fortunately, a British company came to life in 2005, called Butter LONDON.  Founded by two women, a British Entrepreneur and a Celebrity Manicurist, Butter LONDON is a cult sensation making inroads into the prestige nail lacquer market.  Their innovative formulations and trend-setting hues allow you to sport high-fashion colors without compromise.  The color above – Molly Coddled – is an opaque lavender orchid cream – and a nod to the 2014 Pantone Color of the Year.  Available at Boutique retailers. $15 each.

It is said that eyes are a window to the soul.  They also can speak volumes about us – even when we want to be quiet.  It’s no wonder my patients are so concerned about the appearance of droopy brows, heavy lids and crow’s feet as they age.  Fortunately, there is now aultherapyn extremely effective, FDA-approved laser that can lift your brows and eyes – and even your spirits – in just one non-invasive treatment.  The groundbreaking procedure was developed right here in the USA and is called “Ultherapy®.”  Ultherapy® uses ultrasound waves (think prenatal ultrasound) to administer energy deep into the skin.  The ultrasound wave contracts the skin and substantially stimulates collagen production over the following six months.  Patients see both an immediate improvement in their appearance and the results continue to improve over the following months.  The skin around the eyes is lifted, toned and tightened, leaving you looking youthful and refreshed.  Patient satisfaction with Ultherapy® is the highest out of any laser cosmetic procedure (as rated on RealSelf.com) and Ultherapy® has been featured on Dr. Oz, EXTRA and The View.  Ultherapy® is suited for all ages and skin types.
